Retreats|Black Women

Making room for play, wonder and delight is part of our healing

Enjoy a six-day communal heritage and healing retreat for Black women in Senegal, West Africa.   Our retreat will allow us to experience the healing that Walker describes in Anything We Love Can Be Saved – healing means putting the heart, courage and energy back into our bodies with our own culture. Put another way, healing means restoring our connection with our SOUL. In that vein, we will explore Senegal’s vibrant and dynamic culture, (re)connect to nature, celebrate our collective capacity for resilience and resistance through visits to the Museum of Black Civilizations, Goree Island and the African Renaissance Monument, journal as well as practice healing rituals and restorative yoga.

My Diasporic Soul Heritage & Healing Retreat experience was truly amazing. I came expecting one thing and left feeling that I really want to learn more about African culture and my ancestors and how both have so much influence on who we are and what interests us. I felt loved, supported and cared for. As Black woman, it was very comforting being around other Black women who can relate to the plight of black women trying to juggle it all with family and business without forsaking our sanity. My experience was a much-needed retreat that gave me tools when I become fatigued, anxious, concerned, and restless.

ACCOMMODATIONS|LODGING

We will be lodging at the Tangor Guest House, our comfortable, safe and love-filled home. Accommodations consist of double rooms with one single-bed and one full bed, armoire, chair or meditation cushion and bedside table.  Guests use our spacious dormitory-style bathroom.   Our community convenings are held on our downstairs terrace, balcony and salon.  And, of course, we have wi-fi, although we only want you to use to call home not to work.

MEALS

All on-site meals are included in your retreat package; off-site meals are not. Many of our meals will be eaten communally as the practice is customary in Senegal.  The majority of our meals will be traditional Senegalese dishes, which all include animal-based protein – fish, beef, lamb, goat and chicken. Some variations can be accommodated when possible.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
We recommend traveling via JFK (New York) via Delta Airlines or Air Senegal, which offer a direct flight to Senegal’s airport (DSS), which is a few short minutes from the Tangor Guest House.  Of course, you may consider other airlines, including Air France, Tap Portugal, Air Maroc, who fly into Dakar with a range of layover locations, including CDG or Casablanca, respectively. However, these routes have longer layovers.

Of course, we are certainly happy to make arrangements to accommodate you for an additional night should you chose to arrive on a day early or depart a day later.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Teranga is the term for hospitality in Wolof; it is integral to the culture here. So, we will meet you at the airport when you arrive and provide you with transportation back to the airport at the time of your departure.
